About Douglas

At 42yrs of age, I have been teaching for almost 20yrs now. It began with martial arts, which I have been practicing since the age of 9. Being of smaller stature, I became obsessed with body mechanics and how I could best use them to improve every facet of my Martial Arts skillset. This carried over into my work as a health professional and when I started my own facility without  the constraints of the mainstream system, I blossomed into the teacher that I am now. Doing what many would call “impossible” with clients who had been left with no hope until they worked with me.

I absorbed into the work, studying everything from psychology, nutrition, manual therapy and a host of other subjects. I have great pride and dedication to helping my clients achieve amazing results and I will do this work for the rest of my life because it is what I love to do.

I came to Douglas several years back in a mess after every type of medic imaginable told me I had less than 10 years left to walk, due to various injuries. Douglas guaranteed me he could fix me, which is exactly what he did. With his help I became strong and mobile again, which was totally against the odds. During that period, I was working part time for Hibernian as a first team scout, going all over the UK and Europe for them. We were watching a player at the time who moved awkwardly and I took Douglas with me to assess his flow of movement. He told me the kid was heading for a serious knee injury if he didn’t work on certain areas of his body and movement. Sure enough a serious knee injury occurred 6 weeks later. He did the same with another player with a totally different injury a few months later.

Today I am a full time first team scout at Hibernian, and I find myself using lots of the knowledge I gained from Douglas when scouting as I can assess a players flow of movement, (albeit from a more basic level than Douglas) to assess whether or not he has a problem with his biomechanics.
This knowledge I gained from Douglas has become invaluable for me as I look for the quality of talent we require to play for Hibernian.
The longer I have spent in football the more I’ve come to realise that the most expensive commodity at a football club is an injured footballer. For me the advice Douglas will give you will be critical to staying injury free and becoming as strong as possible to help you on the road to becoming an elite level footballer.

There are people who are trained to do things a specific way and people who are educated to find new ways of doing things.
The word education comes from the Latin ‘educo’ which means to change from within.
With Douglas there is no ‘quick fix’ . You are educated in how to train functionally and shown how this training can be integrated into everyday living.
Douglas has changed my outlook on training, through imparting knowledge and kindling enthusiasm. It is encouraging to meet someone as sincere and passionate in their profession. Thank you for everything.

Wow!

Over the past 15+ years I have experienced a gradual deterioration in movement in my hips, legs and feet.  I would push myself at times and suffer increasingly debilitating pain, numbness in my toes, hip and joint pain.  I’d struggle to walk and it felt like the neural messages just wouldn’t reach my legs to get them to work.  5 years ago I was in a wheelchair for around 2 months because it was so difficult to walk.

It took 3 months to get biometric assessments and 2 lots of physiotherapy to get me walking again. I have since had to balance walking/sitting/standing in rotation to keep mobile – too much of any set the pain off again and I struggled to get moving and walk again.

I was diagnosed with fore-foot equinis – basically I don’t have high insteps, my feet have collapsed. It is often genetic.

I was brought to see Douglas whilst on holiday visiting family.  It’s late October and, for someone used to the south of England it was soooo cold.

What followed was between 40 minutes and an hour (wasn’t checking) of manipulation and at times interesting levels of pain – but good pain.  You know how it feels when someone is working out a knot and it hurts but it’s a good pain, you know it’s going to make things better ….

When Douglas finished the session I felt exhausted and pummelled, and I got myself up from the mats.  I got myself up.  I didn’t need someone’s hand or arm to support me  – I got myself up!

I was given two exercises to do daily …. they were almost laughably minimal but, when explained, made sense.  And I do them, every day.

That was 3 weeks ago.  I am such a different person physically.  My feet are straighter (yes I remember about the alignment of the 2nd toe), my hips don’t hurt, my legs don’t ‘misfire’, I don’t have to sit down after 20 minutes activity, I don’t have to stop at stairs to make a mental shift in movement to be able to walk up or down them.  I no longer feel like a member of the Silly Walks Society trying to move after I have sat too long and can’t get my legs into walking mode again.

Oh – and I recently tried on a pair of shoes that I hadn’t worn for months. I couldn’t walk in them …. until I remembered the orthopaedic insoles and removed them.  I don’t need them anymore 🙂 🙂 🙂

I finally found someone who not only understood but had the knowledge and skills to identify where the problems were, and how to undo them, correct them.

I cannot recommend Douglas enough.  I wish I was closer because I would definitely go back for the exercise classes and to seek help with my shoulder.  There isn’t anything like this that I have found near me.

Thank you Douglas – so much!
